Cover Competition 2012

Selected Top 3 ISME Journal Cover 2012:

 A) The image contains three distinct colony morphologies on tryptic soy agar plates representing the adaptive diversity that arose during the biofilm experimental evolution of Burkholderia cenocepacia. Each colony morphotype was detected in succession and maintained throughout the duration of the experiment.  This photo documents the first time all three colony types were found to co-exist in the evolved biofilm experimental evolution.

 B) Scanning electronic microscope image from a senescent diatom from the tropical Lake Kivu (Eastern Africa) heavily colonized by bacteria. Colors are an artificial artistic representation of the different bacterial types usually associated with microalgae.

 C) It features the oxymonad Saccinobaculus (about 12 um in diameter) in front of the parabasalid Barbulanympha, which is covered with rod-shaped Bacteroidales surface symbionts. This is from the hindgut of the wood-feeding cockroach Cryptocercus punctulatus, a close relative of termites.
