The International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME) seeks an experienced professional to manage and support the Society.

What we are looking for
We seek a professional who is motivated, organized, can work independently and has excellent communication skills to assist the ISME Executive, Advisory, and International Boards by providing high-level administrative and organizational support in decision-making and implementing decisions. ISME is an international, non-profit organization that serves microbial ecologists and the wider community by supporting research and education. ISME owns two peer-reviewed journals, organizes both in-person and virtual events, and offers funding opportunities for its members.

The ISME Office is based at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) in Wageningen and supports ISME at all administrative and organizational levels. The ISME Office currently consists of two other members, the ISME Office Manager and the ISME Events Manager.

What you will be contributing
As the (Executive) Secretary of the ISME Board, you will be responsible for managing finances, Board & Committee meetings and administration, communication, and other office tasks. You will support the day-to-day operations of the ISME Office and work in close collaboration with the other ISME Office members. You will also work closely with the ISME Board and Committee members, its journal editors, and be the point of contact for our partners (publisher of our journals, accountants, notary, suppliers etc.).

You will also be responsible for supporting the ISME Treasurer and accountants with the Society's budget, and providing support for contracts between ISME and its partners, publishers, office suppliers, and legal assistance from lawyers.

Job requirements:

  • You have management experience, preferably in an international scientific environment and/or in managing an international non-profit association.
  • You have excellent communication skills and preferably a solid network in either international / European association management or in academia, ideally in the field of microbiology, ecology or other biological or environmental disciplines.
  • You have experience in organizing scientific events such as conferences, symposia, and multiple-day workshops at the management level.

What we are offering
We offer an exciting and attractive position in a non-profit academic society, where you will work closely with a highly motivated and collaborative team and researchers from around the world. You will have the opportunity to travel internationally, for example in preparation for and during ISME's main symposium, which is held every two years in a different country. You will have a strong degree of independence in your work with the possibility to grow and shape your own job.
The appointment is initially for one year, but we are strongly interested in a long-term appointment, with the option of a permanent position after the first year. The working hours are 32-38 hours per week (0.8 - 1 fte) with options for working from home. Since ISME is an international society, the position requires flexible working hours and the willingness to travel internationally. The salary depends on experience. The maximum gross salary for a 1.0 (full-time) position is € 5.439 per month (scale 11 of Collective Agreement for Dutch Universities), excluding 8% holiday pay and a year-end bonus. We offer an extensive package of fringe benefits.

Your workplace
The ISME Office is at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) in Wageningen, The Netherlands. Travel to organize and support Board and conference meetings is estimated at about 10% of the working time.
