Graduate Student Opportunities in Livestock Microbiome at North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota, USA.
Two graduate student positions (one M.S. and one Ph.D. level) are available in Dr. Samat Amat’s lab in the Department of Microbiological Sciences at North Dakota State University (NDSU). The thesis research projects will be conducted in collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Animal Sciences in one of the following topics: 1) understanding the role of maternal microbiome in fetal and offspring development in cattle; 2) harnessing the reproductive tract microbiota to enhance fertility; 3) developing antimicrobial alternative strategies (e.g. bacteriophage, essential oil, and microbiota transplantation) to mitigate bovine respiratory disease and/or liver abscesses in feedlot cattle.

The ideal candidates will be passionate about livestock industry and microbiology and have a desire to make contribution to the livestock industry by developing microbiome-based strategies to mitigate challenges (e.g. antimicrobial resistance) facing the livestock industry. The candidates who have background in animal or veterinary science, and microbiology with previous experience in bioinformatic analysis including amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing are highly encouraged to apply. Experience with North American cattle industry would be advantageous.
