Lab Manager (m/f/d)

Starting as soon as possible. This is an offer for a permanent position.

OEB and Prof. Alexandra Worden’s group primarily focuses on innovations in marine science for investigation of unicellular eukaryotes, microbial interactions between eukaryotic cells and bacteria, archaea and viruses, trophic linkages to zooplankton, and, more broadly, carbon cycling. A variety of approaches ranging from traditional oceanography to lab-based culture physiology work and genetics, genomics and targeted metagenomics are used to investigate these organisms, their ecological roles and interactions. Job Description

Alongside lab management and related organizational tasks (coordination of instruments, processes und resources), the Lab Manager will lead the planning and preparation of research cruises in close collaboration with involved scientists, as well as manage high-tech instrumentation. Importantly this individual will take on leadership of an area of molecular biology lab work, potentially GMO work and/or cultivating algae. Furthermore, the Lab Manager will be responsible for the organization and quality management of inventory, our algae culture collection as well as our photo bioreactors. The ability and willingness to participate in cruises and field work is advantageous as is comfort with high tech instrumentation. The Lab Manager will be responsible for documentation and briefings according to laboratory-relevant German regulations. Therefore, knowledge of such laws in force (e.g. BetrSichV, BiostoffV, NiSV, GefStoffV, GenTG, GenTSV) is advantageous, or the willingness to master these is needed. It is essential that this individual enjoys and participates in a team-atmosphere.  

Qualification

  • B.Sc., B.Eng. or equivalent work experience in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, bioprocess engineering or a related field is required
  • Strong experience with molecular biology techniques is required
  • Strong experience with algal cultivation is required and GMO desired
  • Must be proficient with computer spreadsheet programs and other MS Office applications
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and legal requirements of lab operation is advantageous
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational and interpersonal skills are expected
  • Ability to work in both independent and team-oriented settings is necessary
  • Proficiency in English is a must

This is an offer for a permanent position as Lab Manager. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 10 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a part-time position according to 70% of a full-time equivalent. Therefore, the position cannot be split.
