The Elizabeth Ottesen laboratory in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Georgia is seeking creative and motivated postdoctoral associate for an NIH-funded position studying host and microbial contributions to gut microbiome stability and dynamics.  We use the omnivorous American cockroach as a model system for deciphering host and microbial interactions that determine gut microbiome dynamics and stability following dietary shifts.  The cockroach is a highly tractable and unique model system, as this omnivorous insect hosts a highly diverse gut microbiome that remains stable following extreme dietary shifts.  The Ottesen laboratory studies the physiological basis of this stability by employing a wide range of techniques, including metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, culture of gut microbes and inoculation of gnotobiotic insects with xenobiotic and synthetic microbial communities.

Minimum requirements include a PhD in life sciences.  Preferred qualifications include a PhD in microbiology, bioinformatics, or related field, as well as experience in one or more of the following: host-microbe symbioses, ‘omics of microbial communities (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, or metabolomics), isolation and characterization of novel organisms and/or microbial degradation of complex carbohydrates.  Review of applications will start immediately and continue until the position is filled.  A CV and contact information should be submitted to UGAJobs at https://www.ugajobsearch.com/postings/131451.
